The GriGri® is essentially any other belay device, with the addition of an internal camming mechanism that works like a car seatbelt to catch the sudden shock load of an unexpected fall. Good belay technique is still essential. They do take a lot of practice to use fluently on lead belay. Weighs 225 grams
